Dark Backgrounds with Bright Ships

SneakyTacts

Suggestion

A discussion between several members on the Discord server lead to the suggestion.

The gamma slider can create beautiful dark backgrounds when adjusted to be less than 1.0. The dark background contrasts well with the nebula colors and projectiles. And our spaceships appear impressive when they match the dark environment of space (they also have attractively bright engine trails).

But it also causes our spaceships to be too dark to see their details. And pirates become invisible to our eyes. So, we decided on this suggestion: a way to have lower gamma for everything except spaceships, so we can play the game with lower gamma. I propose a new second slider setting (underneath the gamma slider) that adjusts the contrast of the spaceships and other objects (stations, containers, fighters). The gamma slider would work as normal, but the new slider would *additionally* increase or decrease brightness of spaceships.

With this new slider, we would use a lower gamma setting (e.g. 0.7) and adjust the new slider to increase spaceship brightness (e.g. x1.5). Then we would have contrasting light projectiles on dark backgrounds, and be able to see the pirates and our fleet of ships. This would be a great visual improvement.

Image #2: low gamma settings - good, but too dark in some environments and screens

Image #3: low gamma background (0.66) with bright ship (1.1 gamma) - good visual improvement! (photoshopped by Discord user Cy #3680)

I would also love to have a contrast slider so that we could control the darkness of shadows compared to everything else and make bright things brighter.
