Just a little place for me to chronicle my design journeys!

Made ships in all sorts of games. Space Engineers, Empyrion, even a few in Planet Explorers. The build mode in this reminds me of PE the most with the freedom, and it's making me think a bit more than I'm used to.

Started off with the usual cubes, then moved up to somewhat functional designs for my first real attempt at playing that I think still fit into the general design aesthetic of the game, as haphazard as that is!

You can probably see how the design was evolving. Fairly quick to make in the builder and allowed me to spend time playing.

Once I hit Trinium and got access to hangars I thought "I need a carrier!".  Somehow the design idea behind the other ships had lost its luster (mainly due to stupidly browsing the screenshots on Steam and seeing what other people had come up with) so I decided to put a bit of effort in to the next one. It's the first time I've really gone all out on the greebles... So far I have:

lUv3

It took me a few hours just to get the name right... So far the front is mostly hangar space, with the neck having a few essential systems in it, all covered by integrity fields. I have to say I'm having a lot of fun experimenting and trying out different block types to the usual hull/armour I typically use!

Anyway, I shall continue to post progress as I work on the design.

Ever have one of those days where you feel ill and can't be bothered? Me too! So I did some turret mounts along the front spine. I say mounts, they're just warning strips around the area turrets attach to, which is still the main hull armour spine so they don't get shot off easily...

Time to play for a bit and let the mind regenerate!

Decided to beef up the "little" ships I use for mining/salvaging, basically I nicked someone elses idea of having a cheap ship you can build a bunch of when you hit a system, whack turrets and crew on, and send them off to strip the place.

1BPm

(Bear in mind thrust and max velocity is 20% of full value due to lack of minions)

The "Porker" class is named for the unusually snout-like nose of the ship, reminiscent of terrestrial pigs. At least in the crazed mind of the designer who drew it up it is. Capable of mounting enough crew and upgrades to man upwards of ten turrets, the Porker-Class is a cheap workhorse that, thanks to its integrity field, can withstand fire from dirty little pirate scumbags or nutjob aliens for a limited time without being blown into bacon. Emphasis on "limited time" folks.

Some lunatic people fit out Porkers with guns. Or tusks. That's right, they turn a Porker into a Boar. Like I said, lunatics. Still, a swarm (swarm? What's the collective noun for pigs? A mess? Sounds about right) of these can do some serious damage.

(I'm aware the collective noun is actually "drove" btw!)

So after making a replacement for the drone (why not? Mining lasers you get at the start are more efficient anyway) I decided to work on the escort carrier some more.

She's currently fleshed out for the most part as you can see in the screenshot. Hull and shields around 110k a piece, yaw/pitch around the 0.38 mark, with a roll at 1.1 I think it is right now. Front and side hangars together hold 31 fighters, which fits with it being an escort carrier rather than a full-fledged monster carrier. last time I checked her costs were around $1.2 mil and 150k trinium. Not horrible.

Aaaaanyway. Screenie.

There's more to go on the top of the main body where I want to build a fake bridge (cause who needs a bridge in this game, and who would put one in a vulnerable position? Sod it, it looks cool!) and I've done no greebling on anything further rear than the neck really. I'm aiming for three larger turret mounts in front of the bridge area and a bunch more to the rear. She only has six upgrade slots at the moment, I tried adding computer core but it needed to be mahoosive just to get one extra slot so... maybe I'm doing something wrong there. Still got space inside for more stuff anyway. Progress!

Realised I was going to need something a bit tougher than the Porker before I get to the (still unfinished) Endeavour so I did some fiddling... This one is a pure warship, no cargo hold.

LJia

She's not quite finished yet, haven't decided on the exact number of turret mounts I want to put and whether they're where I want them yet, but she's pretty close. I think the style is similar to how Endeavour is turning out so they should match together quite nicely once I have both, plus once I have enough trinium it's a straight upgrade.

Cheers guys, I appreciate the comments :)

Decided the Lynx was still missing a few things and I wasn't happy with the turret placement, so made some adjustments. Still has eight on the dorsal side but more spread out, and I added two on port/starboard and four on the ventral front to try and even out coverage for point defense. Tweaked the thrusters so there's more braking (and a bit extra turning) at a small loss of max speed. Oh and I added a few extra greebles and stuff. Pretty happy with it, now to get mining/salvaging so I can afford it in my normal game!

Just in case anyone spotted it, the hazard strips on the turret placements are gone. They look cool but each one cost a lot in number of blocks, and I like to try and keep that to a minimum so it doesn't affect performance too much. For example at the moment the Lynz sits around 700 I believe, with the turret mounts using hazard strips it's well over 1000...

I'm (relatively) happy with how this series of designs has been turning out but I still have tweaking to do to make them functional in a normal Avorion game. The Cougar above is a little underpowered on the generator for example, at least I found it so. I'm glad I discovered these things before I finish Endeavour...

Anyway, time for a civilian ship!

7Nli

Cost: $127,690 & 15637 naonite.

The Severn-Class is designed to be multi-purpose. My main use for it is as a miner/salvager, with the dorsal and ventral turret placements on the "nose" designed for miner or salvaging turrets. The two towards the rear of the ship are for a couple of armed turrets for point defense and to hold off enemies long enough for a combat vessel to get in there to help. I wanted something tougher than a Porker that was shielded and could make use of the best turrets (up to naonite) so unlike the other designs the Severn isn't armoured and uses plain naonite hull blocks.

As a civilian ship the colour scheme changes slightly to light grey with pale yellow accents, and she lacks the "antennae" at the front the military ships have too.

Naming scheme is starting to form in my mind. These civilian ships all get names after rivers, the Lynx-class ships are all named after different types of cat, and the Endeavour-class escort carriers, when they're finished, all have names along those lines so things like Effort, Struggle, Enterprise, etc.

I spotted custom fighters are possible with a mod... and may be possible in future anyway. Damn.

So, based on my old Europa design from SE (original example here) I decided to mock up the basic shape for scaling down to fighter size. I always loved this design but it just doesn't fit with the mostly-capital-ship-based nature of Avorion so I've never reproduced it properly. This is just a shell.

yc2h

Scales down nicely too, had it to about the size of the starting block you get when you first found a ship and it still retains the shape.

  • 2 years later...

Help help I got sucked in again argh argh argh  :o :o :o

Getting my feet back under me again... the "starter". Woefully under-powered and crap, but as expected. I haven't been here in a couple of years...

Finding my feet a bit, the Norfolk-Class multi-purpose thingy:

VEla

And then you know when an idea just... clicks... and you go "Yeah. That!"? The unfinished but totally awesome (to me) Wessex-Class:

Bye bye life... Oh and hello all! I'm back for a bit :)

Your ship designs have gotten much better from the titanium tubes you started off making. LOL! :D

I have only made one war ship "officially" and I have one still in the shipyard that has been sitting there forever... I just don't feel like finishing it because I hate arming my ships with random turrets and after a recent update all the turret factories were reset, so I would have to go to like 100+ sectors to find all the best turrets, then get all the parts to make them and I would have to make a lot more if I wanted to make more than one of the same kind of ship... DX I really wish we could just blueprint turrets and make copies of them the way we can with fighters... Maybe when that day comes I will finally finish the Destroyer I have sitting in the shipyard and then make my own thread showing all my weird ship designs.  :-\

Also, I too thought of Planet Explorers when I first saw this game... Such an underrated game.

Also, Also, Nice job on the letters on your ships. I didn't leave any space on my ships for fancy letters like yours, but I guess it doesn't matter because I don't have any names for any of them anyways. XD

Thanks guys! It's good to be back creating again :)

Yeah I struggle a bit with sticking random turrets on. I'm still getting back into the game and trying not to get dead, though I hear it's a lot easier to find components for making your own turrets these days so I'll create a decent cargo ship at some point and go scrounging!

So, the Wessex-Class got finished:

yDe1

Then I modified a Norfolk-Class into a civilian mining ship with a cargo container underneath which bumps it up to just over 200, ought to be enough to keep it mining for a while with these new R-type mining lasers I keep reading about:

k95A

Then I started work on a civilian mining carrier to try out that way of doing things, nowhere near finished yet but the basic shape is fleshed out:

b2IRQ

Definitely got the bug again! I might even have to dust off my old Rustys Galaxy account if it's about and start playing online again...

Every time I find a turret factory that has a turret that I decide will be a standard on my ships, an update resets all the turret factories so I can never get that turret ever again.  :'(

Most of my ships also take a very long time to make because I use a lot of rounded/curved shapes and weird angles on them. Also the way I do my integrity field placement is very tedious, but works well. So I might not ever have a fully armed fleet.  :(

Also, are all your ship's turret placements only on the top? I design my war ships for maximum firing arc in all directions.  ;D

Designing the things definitely seems to take up more of my time than actually using them... but it's fun so that's why we do it isn't it :)

I have ventral turret placements too, though usually not quite as many as on the dorsal side. The Wessex one I did above has another four small and one medium turret mount on the ventral side, because I like coverage too!

My war ship designs have like these 6 fins sticking out of the main body of the ship that hold the engines and have turrets on the ends of them. But for my frigate, just about any angle an enemy ship could come from there is at least 6 turrets that can fire at them.  8)

If only arming the ships with turrets wasn't such a problem. They need to make it possible to copy any turret from any turret factory. That way if an update resets all the turret factories, at least the design we wanted for many or all of are ships is not lost forever.  :'(

That sounds interesting, do you have a thread or some screenshots somewhere? Or is it all top secret?

I got distracted because the Wessex-Class is very nice but I needed something a bit beefier as my main ship,so I began shaping up the  Mercia-Class, which you can see next to a Wessex:

For now, yes. When I can mass produce the ships and when I have my destroyer design finished I will make a thread with screen shots showing the designs. But the integrity field placement will still have to be classified.  ;)

Also, do you have the same color scheme for all your civilian and military ships? Because my mining ship is also colored white and yellow. My military ships have a very dark color scheme with black and a very dark teal as the main colors.  8)

I shall look forward to that then!

Yes I use the colouring seen for civilian and military ships... Originally I was using the cyan and white, the black was an accident (thought I'd got no colour selected) that worked out nicely. I'm still not entirely sure I'm happy with the yellow and white for civilian stuff but I can't find a better base colour so far... I'm still experimenting on that side!

Did some more fiddling around on the civilian mining carrier. I liked the white and yellow but it was a bit too "clean" for my liking, so a more utilitarian grey and blue fit the bill better. Also remodelled the greebles at the back slightly:

edML

Then I did some more work on the new Mercia-Class. Wasn't totally happy with the shape when it sat side by side with the Wessex, so rather than just make it a bigger version I added its own distinct flavour of bits that stick out. Still more work to go but I'm much happier with it now:

Of course ideas can spark at any time, and just after initially posting this reply my brain went "HMMMMM" and then some modifications happened to the carrier again:

Yes, your windows do look cool. Most of my civilian ships have windows like that on them, but a little smaller. I have one mining ship design, built 2 of that design and the color is white with yellow lines. One salvage ship design, (2 built) that is a light brown color with orange lines. A large cargo ship (only one built) that is white with orange lines, and a small cargo ship (only one built) that is a dark orange with lighter orange lines. I might change the color on those last 2. Maybe I will do all mining ships with yellow, all salvage ships with orange, all cargo ships some other color, (maybe green?) and maybe if I have a passenger ship it will use light blue.
