It is great to hear that the game is making a lot of progress and the game model is being reworked so it'll be easier to make new updates. About own-able asteroids, I think that the player should be able to place a block, that would claim some of the nearby asteroids (no more than 20).

This basic block should be fairly cheap and should of course prevent other factions from mining these asteroids.

It should have a turret maybe, I think it would be a natural thing to try and protect 'your asteroids' from enemy factions and pirates, so this block would be a little bit like a "mining outpost".

 

This block or outpost could then be upgraded, the structure should become a bit larger and more complex and a second turret would be added, would claim more asteroids but the big change would be that it would automatically start mining the nearby asteroids.

The more upgrades, the more asteroids it would claim and the faster it would mine the asteroids. I think number of turrets should be capped at 4-6, since it's a "mining outpost" not a fortress.

 

Now by building a few of these, the player would get rich very easily so to prevent that:

- The station(s) would mine asteroids quite slowly by default

- The player could only collect the resources when docked to the station

There are several very interesting aspects in what you've proposed.

I like that you put some thought into not making it unbalanced.

 

I think If you claim an asteroid, you should be able to build whatever you want on it, but of course it will cost you.

So if a player wants to build an outpost, he has to pay for an outpost, and if he wants to build a fortress, he has to pay for a fortress.

I think it would balance itself, especially as the asteroids don't have infinite amounts of resources, so at some point a big mining fortress will be useless if you wait long enough.

 

I'll put more thought in the details though.
