A few things might need tweaking.....

Suggestion

The rate at which we pay a crew should be adjustable by the server admin, also when we tell a ship to escort us it should stay with uys till we tell it no longer to escort us. I have given the command and they make the first jump then no more escort unless i give it again.

This is a known issue that has been discussed before. The AI is far from finished.

Paying every hour seems a bit much maybe every few hours or even once a 24 hour period......would seem good.

What if it was not a server issue, what if the player decided how often the crew were paid? There could be a series payment sliders that allow you to determine how much each crewman is paid and how often (possibly even by job,) and the level of pay could have an effect on their performance. Of course the longer they have to wait to be paid the more they will want to be paid, and the penalties of not paying them would change accordingly. If you miss a payment when they are getting paid every day (5 min in-game) they will not mind as much, but if they get paid once per quarter (once every 6 hours) and you miss it by so much as a second they will be ready to mutiny! It would be wise in that latter case to invest in a paymaster!

 

The total pay of your crew could (in the future of coarse) influence how many crewmen will volunteer to serve on your ship or the quality of the crew available. Maybe (again in the far future) your crew could have needs that they would spend their money on (gambling, luxuries, personal goods, etc...) that might effect their performance?

 

*notice to all crew: no prostitutes will be admitted onto the ship, and always put a hat on your sailor before swabbing the poop-deck, or pumping the bilges. -you captain* :P

Planet surfaces and missions on planets will most likely not get into the game as they would go beyond the scope of what can be done.

 

Hm... I don't think it's impossible... Just not necessarily the way other people might think of it.

What if you don't render full 3D planet surfaces but have 'planetary landings' where you fly towards the planet and then some sort of menu comes up with options... à la Freelancer or that OXP for Oolite, if anyone understands that reference...  http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Planetfall_OXP

 

Anyway, I think it's possible to achieve some sort of planetary landings within the boundaries of Avorion without having a full 3D planet surface. Either way, it's just a thought.
