  1. So what's the deal with Repair Turrets? I tried to help repair a friendly ship between waves of Xsotan/Pirates and it only made my reputation worse. Is this intentional? It sure doesn't seem to make sense.
  2. I haven't even gotten into building stations or getting very involved in the economy. I guess I can see how there's a lot of money to be made. Personally, I've been really into my current phase of "flying my lone ship deep into unknown space, exploring and salvaging. I finally figured out research stations, which has led to me upgrading to some great weapons. I was worried my little ship wouldn't be able to keep up, but I've had no problem. 13 weapons and 2 salvage turrets (which are also weapons, lol) on my little 5-slot. Once I find a area of space I want to settle, I'll get into stations. But for now, the good ship Jungle Love 3 is cruising deep space, blasting only the funkiest of music while tearing through Xsotan fleets.
  3. I dunno... maybe they're kinda mob-like and sometimes they just like to "send a message" by wrecking the crap out of a ship in front of a faction, then jetting off. Maybe they're the more murderous rapey pirates, and less so charming, puckish rogues.
  4. YES, THIS. I sometimes get so caught up in the heat of battle I lose track of how bad off my ship is, especially when hit with shield-penetrating shots.
  5. Has anyone tried using a gamepad or joystick? There's no direct support, but there's a number of programs like xpadder that basically just let you set the gamepad/stick to keyboard/mouse functions. I plan on tinkering with my gamepad later to see if I can make a sort of Avorion set-up on XPadder
  6. Hey there fellow space cadets! So I just wanted to throw out a quick game and community love/appreciation post. I got this game because the building really interested me, and I was looking for an immersive space experience. I wanted to skirmish, explore, maybe just float around and salvage while listening to ghetto funk.... and that's exactly what I've gotten out of Avorion! The game has sucked me in so much! I started as a simple exploration craft and cargo hauler. I'd explore, mine, haul cargo, make some credits... but then I found an Exotic Object Detector... suddent, those hidden mass sectors looked a whole lot juicer when my systems would just highlight the valuables. This led me deeper and deeper into space. Eventually I ditched my mining turrets in favor of more weapons, but I kept the salvage turrets - I seem to get faster return on salvage than mining. Then I started getting my butt kicked by pirates. So weapon systems upgrades and a hull refit later.... my ship is a deadly forced to be reckoned with. I can only imagine the pirates bewilderment, screaming "IT'S JUST ONE SHIP!" over their comms as I rip their fleet apart on straggler at a time. Stashes and salvage have been good to me. I feel like I have an unholy amount of weapons for how small my ship is (barely a 5-slot). So yeah. I love Avorion. Never been so pleased. I even refit my computer desk to feel more like the helm of a space ship. Thanks, developers, for the amazing game experience. I've more than got my money's worth already. (I have a dollar/hour policy. Any game worth it should give me at least 1 hour of entertainment for every dollar I spent.). Plus, the community has been really helpful and friendly online, patiently answering my dumb questions in the middle of space pirate battles.... Much love. Carry on.
  7. Geeeez, so much salt. It's early access. You knew what you were getting into. And it was rather cheap. If you've played more than 20 hours, you got your money's worth. $1/hour for entertainment? You don't get that with movies. I'd rather wait for a playable update without too many bugs. When developers rush to put out updates, that's how you end up with overly-buggy nightmares that could of been avoided if the devs took a tiny bit more time. (unrelated genre, but also early access - DayZ had this problem. still does, it's been stuck in Alpha FOR YEARS) Like, I understand not being naively positive... or "fanboy" as Hellatze says.... but there's a difference between "fanboy" and "supportive player". I little positive thinking and respect for fellow community members can go a long way. Needless negativity creates toxicity and who wants that nonsense?
  8. Thanks for this! Useful bit of meta. I'll certainly use this going forward!
  9. Pineapple, bacon, feta, jalapeno. mmmm delicious.
  10. Hey there. I'm another fairly new player, I'm now about 35-ish hours in. If you're anything like me and really love to flesh out details or get creative with builds, then it takes some time. I had many instances of getting attacked mid-build. After some hard lessons, here's my 2 cents: - have a plan in mind. Keep it simple. - build your most basic shape near a station, so you can hire crew quickly(you have to be docked to hire crew). - Place engines and thrusters early! That way you can get away. Or go fly out to the edge of a sector to build well away from anyone. Keep an eye on those pirates, tho... - remember any block can be turned into any other block, so you can always upgrade later. - you can select a sector to hyperspace jump to at anytime, and it'll stay ready to go, even if you go back into the builder, etc. Makes for quick response sector change. - I've seen several helpful Avorion youtube videos, they certainly helped me get around the initial learning curve. well, I hope you stick around! I was frustrated early on but now am rather hooked. It still hurts to lose a ship, but I'm learning that's the nature of this game...
  11. Lol, pretty much! My leap into cargo hauling/smuggling was a moment of "Oh hey, look at all that cargo just floating out there... I can't let those credits go to waste!" then building what amounts to a rather large "shipping container" build onto the underside of my ship...
  12. I've always liked K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) This game is a space game, and I get how planets add to a space game. But I think could be better implemented as a menu thing. How planets sometimes appear as backdrop? Well, perhaps special planetary transit stations appear with them, to open a different sort of interface. Maybe crazy cheap minerals and specialized goods. But full landings? There's already a ton of crafting games that craft on the ground... Avorion does Space, and does it well. Keep it simple. But just think of the scale of what you're proposing, on a game that has a rather small (but dedicated) developing team. I want them to stay dedicated, so we all keep seeing enjoyable, realistic results. Adding random planets? With enough content to be fun? I don't think it'd add anything to the experience that is Avorion. Keep developing the space stuff, that's where the meat of this game is. Just my opinion tho.
  13. Initially I put a lot of time into collecting mats with my drone before building my first ship. A couple crashed ships (hard lessons learned) later, I've spent a whole lot of time just hopping sector to sector, exploring blips, mining materials, and fighting off pirates and Xsotan wherever I go. In some unexpected salvage, I got into a bit of trading. I just recently hit tier-3 materials, opening up some fun new ship functionality for me. I ended up becoming hated by a faction for getting caught smuggling stolen goods... twice... of course I didn't comply. What smuggler does? .... I just have to avoid those guys now... and learned my lesson about getting too close to frigates...
  14. Hello out there! I picked up this game recently and have already dumped over 30 hours into it. I freaking love this game. I lucked out and found titanium quickly, and build a nice light and fast craft to do sort of a little of everything. I've barely made it to 3rd tier materials! I get so distracted, mining, salvaging, harassing pirates, fighting aliens, and trading cargo. I feel like Avorion has the right balance of complexity and simplicity. It' got all the nuance you could need, without killing your CPU or GPU with needless frills. Plus, my video card is kind of a potato and this game runs amazingly well. I'm going to buy a couple copies for friends.
