  1. They're spinning in your head, that's what counts 8) Haha yeah I struggle to finish... I can usually get to, or close to, completion of the shell but then filling it out with all the stuff that actually works tends to get left because I get distracted by another idea :o Apart from the hangar that ship up there is nothing but framework inside ;D As I doubt I'll be around tomorrow, Merry Christmas to you and everyone!
  2. I've yet to mess around with custom turrets. Last time I played I don't think it was a thing? Been a while! Same with custom fighters, I did some shapes in preparation but then when they launched I was playing other things. Good point on the turret placement though... I may add a little extra to the superstructure of the ship to raise that bit. I am intrigued by the custom turret though... I'm liking the six barrel minigun-type idea! Very nice :) EDIT: I like! Thanks for the idea :) Custom turrets can come later, I struggle to finish ships as it is :o
  3. Yeah I like coming up with colour schemes... When/if I ever get round to doing some designs that differ from these ones (going on past experience) I'll come up with some sort of company name that's behind the designs and a colour scheme that matches the corporate one. Previous entries include Terrastar (white and red), Winters Aerotech (white and dark blue), NeoTech (grey and yellow), and Advanced Vehicular Designs (white, black, and green) just because it's fun to imagine competing companies. I sometimes go completely overboard and create corproate logos for them too... Nerd alert! I pretty much finished what has become the Endeavour-Class civilian mining carrier. Not a huge difference to the previous screenshot (turret placements are filled for illustration purposes) but it fleshes it out. There are two more small turret points on the ventral side too, all mainly aimed at PDC/PDL/AF weaponry but I suppose you could put anything you like there. Then I did a bit more detail work on the Mercia-Class, followed by idle curiousity wondering how the ship sizes compared so far so... Left to right: Merica-Class, Wessex-Class, Norfolk-Class (civilian variant), and Endeavour-Class.
  4. Did some more fiddling around on the civilian mining carrier. I liked the white and yellow but it was a bit too "clean" for my liking, so a more utilitarian grey and blue fit the bill better. Also remodelled the greebles at the back slightly: Then I did some more work on the new Mercia-Class. Wasn't totally happy with the shape when it sat side by side with the Wessex, so rather than just make it a bigger version I added its own distinct flavour of bits that stick out. Still more work to go but I'm much happier with it now: Of course ideas can spark at any time, and just after initially posting this reply my brain went "HMMMMM" and then some modifications happened to the carrier again:
  5. I shall look forward to that then! Yes I use the colouring seen for civilian and military ships... Originally I was using the cyan and white, the black was an accident (thought I'd got no colour selected) that worked out nicely. I'm still not entirely sure I'm happy with the yellow and white for civilian stuff but I can't find a better base colour so far... I'm still experimenting on that side!
  6. That sounds interesting, do you have a thread or some screenshots somewhere? Or is it all top secret? I got distracted because the Wessex-Class is very nice but I needed something a bit beefier as my main ship,so I began shaping up the Mercia-Class, which you can see next to a Wessex:
  7. Designing the things definitely seems to take up more of my time than actually using them... but it's fun so that's why we do it isn't it :) I have ventral turret placements too, though usually not quite as many as on the dorsal side. The Wessex one I did above has another four small and one medium turret mount on the ventral side, because I like coverage too!
  8. Wow that's a big ship! I haven't got close to designing something that large yet, so kudos there! :)
  9. Thanks guys! It's good to be back creating again :) Yeah I struggle a bit with sticking random turrets on. I'm still getting back into the game and trying not to get dead, though I hear it's a lot easier to find components for making your own turrets these days so I'll create a decent cargo ship at some point and go scrounging! So, the Wessex-Class got finished: Then I modified a Norfolk-Class into a civilian mining ship with a cargo container underneath which bumps it up to just over 200, ought to be enough to keep it mining for a while with these new R-type mining lasers I keep reading about: Then I started work on a civilian mining carrier to try out that way of doing things, nowhere near finished yet but the basic shape is fleshed out: Definitely got the bug again! I might even have to dust off my old Rustys Galaxy account if it's about and start playing online again...
  10. Help help I got sucked in again argh argh argh :o :o :o Getting my feet back under me again... the "starter". Woefully under-powered and crap, but as expected. I haven't been here in a couple of years... Finding my feet a bit, the Norfolk-Class multi-purpose thingy: And then you know when an idea just... clicks... and you go "Yeah. That!"? The unfinished but totally awesome (to me) Wessex-Class: Bye bye life... Oh and hello all! I'm back for a bit :)
  11. I'm sure that's one of the upcoming features.
  12. I definitely recommend this server if you're looking for somewhere to play online. I'm a SP type of guy normally but occasionally play online if I find somewhere I feel comfortable and with a good community, and Rusty's definitely has that. The mods are useful, other players are generally very friendly, and it's been a lot of fun so far!
  13. Not late at all, this is supposed to be a continual thing. Both the ships posted look great, two completely different design philosophies but still looking amazing. Gotta love the ship builder in this game! Today I took the plunge and joined a multiplayer server. Seems nice, people are friendly enough, and it's pretty popular as I had to wait a while this evening before I could get on. Made myself a basic line of cubes with the starting resources they give you and hyperspaced my way to trinium areas, then started building my empire... Got a miner and my main combat ship up and running, so next it's time to gather some more modules and explore the surrounding area!
  14. Even on the border of getting trinium stuff this little beggar I picked up within the first 20 minutes of playing this particular galaxy is fourth in damage, only behind three cannon turrets. Until I hit stuff with shields it absolutely shredded enemies, and it's still pumping out crazy damage now. :)
  15. Thought it might be nice to have a topic where we can talk about what we've been up to in the game, relate any amusing anecdotes, discuss interesting things that happened or that we've seen, and so forth. Mainly so I can start with: Today I built a naonite hyperspace jumper in my starting sector to travel back to where I had been, because last night I took the NCS Cougar (my main ship at that point) nose first into an asteroid I didn't see coming... at full boosted speed. Needless to say the explosion was immediate! Managed to get back fast enough to reclaim all my turrets and upgrades, then shoved some salvaging lasers on the mining pet I'd had with me (still sitting in a nearby sector) and salvaged what I could from my wreck. Asteroids hurt people! So, what did you do in Avorion today?
  16. *cough* http://www.avorion.net/forum/index.php/topic,2300.0.html ;)
  17. That wouldn't change the generated energy, only the draw. I think the update somehow deleted one of my generators, since it's the same on the ship I'm using and the template. Easy fix.
  18. I can't see anything in the notes but I'll ask here... Has anything been changed with regards to power generation? Before the patch my ship was generating excess energy except when the hyperdrive was recharging, now even with turning the flight assist thing off it's still way down. Before it was around 14 GW, now it shows 11.84 GW.
  19. Lovely looking ship, simple yet elegant :)
  20. Aaaaand another one of my older designs made ready for fighter scaling, the Backsword: Helpme
  21. I spotted custom fighters are possible with a mod... and may be possible in future anyway. Damn. So, based on my old Europa design from SE (original example here) I decided to mock up the basic shape for scaling down to fighter size. I always loved this design but it just doesn't fit with the mostly-capital-ship-based nature of Avorion so I've never reproduced it properly. This is just a shell. Scales down nicely too, had it to about the size of the starting block you get when you first found a ship and it still retains the shape.
  22. I'm (relatively) happy with how this series of designs has been turning out but I still have tweaking to do to make them functional in a normal Avorion game. The Cougar above is a little underpowered on the generator for example, at least I found it so. I'm glad I discovered these things before I finish Endeavour... Anyway, time for a civilian ship! Cost: $127,690 & 15637 naonite. The Severn-Class is designed to be multi-purpose. My main use for it is as a miner/salvager, with the dorsal and ventral turret placements on the "nose" designed for miner or salvaging turrets. The two towards the rear of the ship are for a couple of armed turrets for point defense and to hold off enemies long enough for a combat vessel to get in there to help. I wanted something tougher than a Porker that was shielded and could make use of the best turrets (up to naonite) so unlike the other designs the Severn isn't armoured and uses plain naonite hull blocks. As a civilian ship the colour scheme changes slightly to light grey with pale yellow accents, and she lacks the "antennae" at the front the military ships have too. Naming scheme is starting to form in my mind. These civilian ships all get names after rivers, the Lynx-class ships are all named after different types of cat, and the Endeavour-class escort carriers, when they're finished, all have names along those lines so things like Effort, Struggle, Enterprise, etc.
  23. Hyperion Systems has arrived in Avorion, and once again I feel like a complete amateur. Damn you 5urg3, damn you... ;D
  24. Do not forget copy/paste! Do not forget copy/paste! Oh, and don't forget copy/paste! You have no idea how much time I've lost doing a bunch of details (turret placements in this case) individually when I finally, finally, remembered I could do one and copy/paste it into the place I want all the others. I've wasted hours, and I'm not exaggerating, on something that could be done in 10 minutes. Also the "No Snap" option for block placement can be useful for detailing and getting stuff to line up that isn't playing nice. Don't be afraid to experiment. I've built ships in Planet Explorers, Space Engineers, Empyrion, and From the Depths, and the ship designer in Avorion is by far the best I've used (opinion) when it comes to making good-looking designs.
