  2. It's crazy how time flies! It’s been a whole year already since Avorion left Early Access!

We are super happy with how things have been going! That’s why we have a little surprise for you:

Update 2.0 will introduce massive changes that will fundamentally improve many aspects of the game:

    • New progression system in which players acquire building knowledge of the various materials

    • New “Classic Avorion” scenario without the new progression

    • Fully configurable “Free Play” scenario

    • Captains with specialized talents and personalities

    • Improved AI orders to send your ship to go mining, trading, scouting and more

    • Improved UI visuals

    • Improvements to the independent targeting mechanics

    • Many QOL improvements like less micro management, easier traveling to far away sectors and crew management, autopilots, many balancing changes, UI improvements like a sector overview that shows available missions, goods and crew members of all stations, and many more!

Update 2.0 will improve game mechanics that might not feel perfect at the moment. Many of these changes will make Avorion feel like a new game, that is why the title of the update will be “Avorion Update 2.0”.

More details about the specific changes will be coming over the next few weeks. Stay tuned!

  4. Hello everyone,

As you know, your feedback and suggestions about Avorion are very important to us. Therefore we have prepared a list for you where you can see which suggestions we think are "possible" and which are "not possible" for us.

The list serves as an overview for you. Please note that we cannot implement certain suggestions due to technical reasons, even if we wanted to. Also, suggestions have to be expressed and phrased clearly, and must always be in line with our vision of Avorion.

All points in the "possible" section are headlines from your suggested topics. Some topics contain multiple suggestions, so please note that we will implement certain things from the topics only partially. Also, we can’t give an ETA on when we’ll add which feature.

I remember in some of the latest news or patch-notes koonschi was talking about new sound effects to be released in  an upcoming update. I'd like to know if they are planed to be as easily customizable as the current ones, by simply dropping/replacing .wavs in the sfx directory. The new sounds were to have some kind of variation for far distances (I imagine them like a muffled thunderstorm for weapons, like in homeworld).

I played around with some background chatter noise and custom fighter engine sounds - which are very hard to achieve right now, because I can't stick a sound to an entity for repeated 3d playback - and it already improves the "aliveness" of Avorion big time. So I think Avorion would greatly benefit from new sfx, but I'd like to know if the alternate sound versions are intended to work like filters or will rather have to be generated by modders themselves. I'd certainly prefer the first option, so I can still easily swap the sounds for star wars or whatever 🙂 It would also be nice to know if modders will finally be able to add new sounds, not being forced to replace the old ones.

Hey dear, everything you mentioned is already working and can be done 🙂

  7. Hi everyone! Long time no update! Sadly, gaming studios like us didn’t get spared from the corona crisis either and we had to realize that work gets done a lot slower at home office than at our official offices. But nevertheless, we’ve been steadily working on the game and we’ve got a new update ready for you!

In this update, we're mainly improving the tutorial and story. Additionally, we also have some performance updates for you, so let’s dive right into it!

    11.thumb.png.53ba6abd83309dedd1b677a128ca56f5.png
    Updated Tutorial
The tutorial originally dates back to the year 2017, when we first released Avorion into Early Access on Steam. The game has been updated a lot since then and the tutorial was in dire need of an update to reflect the current state of the game better. So we completely revamped it to offer an updated introduction into the game. It explains more things like adding upgrades to your ship, building turrets, and that getting your ship blown up is also a part of the game. We also shortened some other parts, like looking around and steering the ship, which doesn’t usually need lengthy explanations.

    Story Improvements
The loose story of Avorion tends to have people lost at some point and searching for clues in forums and the Wiki. While we do think that a mainly-intended-as-a-sandbox game’s story should not hold hands too much, we don’t think that requiring players to regularly look for clues outside of the game is the way to go. We’ve added tons of inter-missions (get it, haha..? okay, sorry.) to aid you gathering the parts required to cross the barrier.

    Map.thumb.jpg.53ce10604f3c1e65908f326860f69b3c.jpg
    Galaxy Map
The galaxy map has received a major update as well! Ships are now listed on the right side and can be commanded more easily, without the hassle of sometimes clicking on sectors and sometimes on other ship portraits. It’ll also help you see where ships/stations are stationed (last one, promise).

    Localizations
We added Chinese (Simplified), Spanish and Russian as officially supported languages!

    Client_Profile.thumb.png.070e491aa3e5aa00b9f3768327d80f19.png
    Performance Optimizations and Logging
We also improved performance on the client and servers (mainly for large servers) and we added some tools that will help us identify performance bottlenecks in the future. Particles are now less performance-hungry and we’ve fixed some crashes related to particle systems.
So things are looking up if you’ve been experiencing poor performance! Just keep in mind that Avorion was never designed as an MMO (and never will be) and hosting servers for dozens of people at the same time is still a challenge (which we intend to overcome though!).

    Other changes
There are tons of other changes in many areas, like bug fixes, UI improvements, better station founding (use a station design of the faction you bought the founder ship from), visual updates to loot and wreckages, and many more! To get a complete overview, check out the complete patch notes here:

  8. Hello everyone,

during the past weeks, we have received reports about performance issues by some players. We’d like to address these issues ASAP, but for that, we need your help! We cannot reproduce these problems on our machines, so we need some performance benchmarks from you.

We rely on your help to find those issues. If you want to help us, then update your game to version 1.1.* (which is currently on the beta branch) and use the /status and /profile commands when your server performance goes awry. (Once the beta goes to default you can just use the commands directly without switching to beta.)

It will save anonymous benchmark data that help us identify performance bottlenecks that you experience, and that we cannot reproduce on our machines. This is how the commands work:

/status: In order for this command to work, you have to enable profiling=true in your server.ini file; otherwise, it won’t do very much. It will save a performance benchmark of the past 30 seconds to a file. Use this when performance was bad and you want to save the reasons why.

/profile: This enables profiling=true for 30 seconds and then records a performance benchmark during those 30 seconds. It will then save the data to a file.

To help us, please send the saved benchmark files to contact@boxelware.de.

This would help us tremendously. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Avorion is a fun game, in my opinion, that's a reality.

Back in March, when the game launched 1.0, and the Pandemic stuff started being a thing, I took it upon myself to mobilise myself and my org's staff to whip up an updated Avorion server and promote it to try and build a community, plus maybe help some people keep sanity in this madness. That was March.

I didn't realise that the server software was going to perform as abysmally as it did. We have seen drastic performance issues with only 5-12 people, and that's with absurdly over-provisioned specs. I posted and reported on this matter as early as March 22nd : https://www.avorion.net/forum/index.php/topic,6443.0.html

Between now and then we've seen a few Beta updates (which we haven't tested, because beta in production is bad practice), and a few aspects of those updates have mentioned server performance. I don't know if those would address the issues we've experienced, but the optimist in me says there's a good chance it would.

Fastforward, it is now May 26th.

Yes, I know, there's a literal global pandemic going on, but I'm not going to wait around forever running my server with the devs not releasing something that is literally crippling my server, and many other servers.

Nobody wants to play on servers with the lag we've experienced, and it most certainly is not anything we're doing wrong, nor how many resources we're allocating.

So when exactly are we going to get any real updates that fix server performance? It's been months, and supposedly code is already written.

I'm a patient person, but at the end of the day, I'm not going to wait around forever. If the devs aren't going to fix the performance issues, I'm eventually going to nuke my server and probably move onto other games.

I want to run a massive server, and with the way the server code works now, that's literally impossible.

This game could be awesome in scale.

So devs, when? I don't think we've seen a single update since release that wasn't beta.

    Hey there,

I completely understand that you and many others are waiting for an update. You won't have to be patient much longer. 🙂 I can also understand that the beta is too "uncertain" for many, but unfortunately we need exactly this data to make improvements. We have a new command ( /profile ) that checks the performance and this is the data we need to analyze the issues. So if it is possible for you, please send us exactly these data so that we can help you in the best possible way.

If you like, you can write to me directly via discord, for faster communication. @sue #2919

    Boarding Actions:

Clunky. Commanders, Generals, etc, take far too long to kill. Please add an overwhelming force variable. If I drop in with 24 shuttles ferrying 1000 troops on a station that says "270 to 360" for the boarding action, it should be over very, very quickly once the defenses are down.

    Turret Factories:

I cannot replicate a level 52 turret as the turret factories all appear to be stuck at Level 50. Research stations on the other hand, can hit level 52. So you can research and create a turret and then not duplicate it. I don't know if this is a bug, or by design.

Question--how does one "Create" an independent turret?

-Shrink Option: Option to take a turret that is "x slots" and spend either a higher material and lots of money or lots of money to shrink it from an X socket gun to a Y socket gun. Rail guns are huge, but being able to shrink them from 5-6 slot to 3-4 slot would be amaze. Surely there would need to be some sort of limit for this as in within 1-2 of their max slots are max shrink, or there'd be ships out there with 50 coaxial guns re-enacting shotguns.

    Station and Station AI:

It makes no sense for a [any] station with gunners to require independent turrets in order to function without the player selecting "attack enemies" in order for the station to defend itself in the player's absence (such as when another player is in the station's sector and spawns pirates/xsotan). If the guns are on the station (and it is a station) the guns/launchers should function automatically regardless of whether or not they are "independent."

Allow players to purchase cargo shuttles from neighboring stations or gate connected sectors from the station itself (for a $ fee).

    Captain AI and Coaxial Mounts:

I spit my coffee out when I watched my swarm of patrol boats armed to the teeth with spinal mount coaxial railguns attempting to destroy pirates. The AI does not understand how to use a Coaxial mount. It tries to get next to the enemy for "normal" turret functionality. I had to pull all of the coax railguns and put regular turrets on the swarm. Basically they just fire the coaxial mount randomly.

    "Station Jump" Installation:

I understand that there are mods out there that allow you to move stations, but something official would be nice. Particularly with asteroid bases. Doesn't matter if its expensive or paired with a special block, but finding an asteroid or three in a sector far from home is painful. If you could claim them, install a jump drive on them, and then move them even 1 sector at a time (say require twice the hyperdrive to get the same distance as a ship, since its a big ol' rock, and have hyperdrive boost components work at 1/4 or even 1/8 what they would normally), that would allow for an interesting component to the game. Especially if its 2-5 minutes between jumps. You could potentially have a "protect my new rock" mission while you're jumping 1-3 asteroids or bases from one sector to another. This would also allow players to slowly move their base of operations around the galaxy.

    Component enhancement Ideas:

Gyro enhancer - If I have a big powerful ship I still want it fairly maneuverable. This option could allow further ship balance of shield/health vs maneuverability.
-Increase roll/yaw/pitch by x% or .xx

Inertial dampener enhancer - Improve deceleration by x%

Inertial compensator enhancer - Decrease Mass by x%

    Build Component Ideas:

Specified thruster types: Pitch/Yaw/Roll - I know its kind of redundant, but something that automagically takes a look at the center of mass and what direction the ship is pointing. I'm honestly not sure sometimes if thrusters help at all regardless of where I put them, particularly on larger ships as it takes 10-20 new thrusters to get even 0.01+ to yaw or pitch or roll.

Inertial compensator - lowers the "acknowledged mass" of the vessel, avorion only, and extremely pricey.

    Gameplay Ideas:

Independent targeting lock - If you have independent targeting groups allows players to set a hot key specified to those groups (similar to how fighter wings work with Shift + 1, but use Ctrl or Alt +1). Those would boost the player ability to use coaxial guns that have range too long to really use with the busy reticles.

Lead reticle for long ranged weapons - If you check out Freespace, there's a lead reticle for where it is anticipated your opponent will be, same with Independence War (which this game reminds me a lot of, I'll add). It would mainly be useful for chain guns, pulse guns, bolters, and cannons.

I'll add more to this as I continue to go through the game. I have created a legendary sales component and am going to be tackling "trading" soon.

You guys have done well---I'm only playing online so I'm sure its a little different to some degree.

Hello dear, thank you for your suggestion! 🙂 I think it would be good to write them into the new suggestions vote system! 🙂

  11. Hey, I'm very sorry you didn't like Avorion. Unfortunately, the only way to get a refund is via Steam. If you like, you can tell me what exactly you didn't like, then we can work better on optimizing the game! 🙂
